Preparing to Write Good Prepper Fiction

Prepper fiction, a subgenre of speculative and survivalist literature, is appreciated by a unique readership fascinated by resilience, resourcefulness, and the “I knew I was right” preparedness that comes from a specific type of person in a post-apocalyptic world. That person is the prepper. Most preppers have experienced some degree of exposure to the ridicule or rolled eyes of a general population that does not understand their obsession with underground bunkers, food bins, and Benelli rifles. I grew up on a California earthquake fault line and prepping for 3-5 days survival is pretty standard. True preppers take it to another level as they wait for any number of ways preparedness will save them when SHTF (I'll let you Google the acronym).

Understanding the Audience

A reader of prepper fiction is either learning about or already entrenched in prepper culture. It's slightly different from straight survivalism and dystopian enthusiasts. There's leeway for not quite getting things right in either of those genres, but preppers will make the authenticity and practical knowledge included in a novel known in the reviews. There is almost zero wiggle room for mistakes as they are keenly aware of the skills, tools, and mindset required to endure disaster, which makes accuracy in depictions of survival tactics essential. Writers must immerse themselves in not just the fundamentals of survivalism—fire-making, food preservation, navigation, and self-defense—but a prepper mentality to build credibility.

The Role of Realism

Realism is a cornerstone of prepper fiction. While the genre often ventures into speculative or apocalyptic territories, it thrives on plausibility. Whether the plot revolves around societal collapse, a natural disaster, or an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack, the cause of the catastrophe must be grounded in a logical framework. The issues faced by characters—shortages of food and water, breakdowns in communication, and threats from nature or other humans—should feel authentic and relatable. It also must show how prepared the prepper is compared to those who were less prepared, or not prepared at all. There's a level of pride to this preparedness and it should be respected.

Building Up the Conflict and Characters

Prepper fiction is inherently a high-stakes genre, with survival as the ultimate goal. The conflict arises from the threats beyond the core group and problems or power plays that occur within it. As for characters, some may be more charitable with resources while others can't fathom the perceived risk to their own self-preservation. Then there are rival factions, scarce resources, the harshness of the environment, and an untrustworthy government. The best stories lean into the psychological toll of survival and the physical adaption.

Balancing Hope and Despair

While prepper fiction often plays with grim scenarios, it does offer hope. That hope stems from their preparedness initially and grows beyond into the inherent ingenuity and the ever-present determination of humanity to endure. A well-crafted prepper novel keeps readers entertained, but also empowers them with a renewed appreciation for self-reliance and community. By pulling together all this and, of course, a hearty dose of personal creativity, there's little to stop an author from writing prepper fiction that strikes a chord with readers who understand how survival is as much about heart as it is about skill.
