Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing: How to Choose the Best Option for Your Book

Nowadays, there are 2 different routes taken by both veteran and prospective writers. The first one is traditional publishing and the second one is self-publishing. Both of these methods have their own sets of pros and cons, and these come into play as you select which publishing route is best for your needs.

Traditional publishing, as the name suggests, would mean that you’re going to get a publisher to have your book produced. The publishing house would take care of related services such as editing, printing, selling, and promoting your book to outlets such as bookstores. While this has been the popular route for a lot of writers over the past century, going the self-publishing route has become an equally popular alternative. While this is riskier and more labor-intensive, it has its advantages such as 100% royalties from sales and free rein to create your book’s content as you please.

While you might think that going for traditional publishing has become obsolete, it still has unique advantages that can prove compelling for writers of all levels.

Professional help - The help of a publishing company ensures that the finished product will be presented in a professional manner. Not only do they help in ensuring that your book’s content is spot-on, but they can also help in designing the presentation of your book.

Better distribution and promotion - Your book is distributed more widely with the help of a publisher. Also, publishers know how to promote a book, especially if they think you and your book deserve a look by the reading community.

It adds prestige to you as a writer - Being with a publishing house can help you build your name as a writer even while you are new at it. Being affiliated with a publisher usually means you’ll also be a part of writer’s associations and awarding bodies.

While those are strong advantages on the side of traditional publishing, there are advantages to self-publishing that are simply too tantalizing to ignore.

Full royalties - You and your co-authors will earn 100% of the profits should your book actually sell. If your book turns out to be a major hit, that would mean you could earn a ton of cash from your ideas.

Full control in content - There are some publishers that are quite choosy when it comes to content. They may interfere with your content or even dictate that you should write about this or that. With self-publishing, you’ll have full creative authority with the books you make.

Make publishers go for you - The tendency is that if a writer is good, the publishers will follow. If you are actually successful in selling self-published books, publishers will chase you, regardless if they have rejected your works before.
