Share Your Trauma, Redeem Your Trauma

Did you ever dream you’d be able to reach others with your words of hope? You survived a traumatic event and now have a story to tell. Perhaps a while has passed since then, and you’re not sure your words will have the same impact or where to share them. If that’s you, allow this article to encourage you. Your story matters, and there are multiple ways to share it so those who need it can find it. After escaping a toxic marriage 14 years ago, I wanted to someday support others going through the same thing. I anticipated that what I shared would help readers feel seen and understood, giving them hope that recovery was possible. I had no idea it would take 10 years to realize that dream, but the journey has been worth it. No matter how long since your dream began, it’s not too late for your words to touch those who need them. Perhaps you only need strategies to get started. Before I share those, remember that your story is from your point of view. If you’re concerned, as I was, about others’ potential responses, you can protect them by changing their names and some of the details. You can also search online for stories similar to yours to see how they shared and what others suggest.

As I mentioned before, there are several ways for you to share your story. For example, you can write and self-publish a book. I’ve read that writing your story as a memoir cements your healing, and that recording your manuscript as an audiobook is a powerful healing agent. If you’re not keen on writing a memoir, you could write a self-help style book related to the trauma you overcame or even a poetry book. Then again, if writing a book seems too daunting, you could start with a blog. There are free sites like Blogger, or you could write on platforms like Medium or Substack. Another option is finding podcasts that focus on the type of trauma you encountered. There are Facebook groups dedicated to linking podcasts with guests, or you can search for them manually. Another option is to share your story via your own YouTube channel. Even if you’re not comfortable on camera, if the idea appeals to you, you’ll get better with practice. Answering questions on sites like Reddit or Quora is another viable option.

The digital age we live in makes sharing our messages of hope easier than ever. You never know who will be touched by your words, but it’s worth exploring what’s possible if this has been a long-time dream. I’ve learned that sharing your story doesn’t just impact those who hear or read your message; it impacts you. Even one positive comment from one person can redeem your trauma. That’s why it’s worth pushing through self-doubt and fear to start the process. Though I experienced my share of fear and self-doubt, I don’t regret the books I’ve written, the podcasts I’ve been on, and the other ways I’ve communicated my story. My story is worth sharing, and so is yours. Why not get started today?
