Taking Criticism

I know the feeling. You put your heart into a piece. You submitted it, only to be asked if you even put time into what you wrote. OK. My advice? Do not brood. They cannot see you (unless you are video chatting) so take some time out for yourself until revision. Cook your favorite dish, look at a magazine, listen to some music, etc. Just do not give up. Maybe the person giving you criticism is being a mentor and wants to be tough on you to make you successful and they do not have some personal problem with you. They probably are not some bully that you think they are.

Have you ever been given wonderful praise? Think about that person cheering you on. You are capable of doing something right. Right?

Yes, there are times when one knows when to call it quits after a while. For example, I attempted to get into the greeting card verse business. I was told over and over and over to keep submitting. If the verse was so good, why was I not being published? I put a lot of time and effort into the verses daily. That is one time I wish I had been given good and healthy criticism such as that I stink at greeting card verse and why not do something different in the field of writing.

Maybe the person giving you the criticism was simply having a bad day. Send a little email saying thank you and have a good day. Joyce Meyer, who has over 100 books, often teaches that a person should act as if in the wrong even when not. Doing this creates a peaceful atmosphere.

Do you just know that the piece really is as good as you think? If so, submit the piece elsewhere. There are millions of places on the web to look into. Subscribe to job boards for telecommuting writers. However, remember, there may be more criticism coming your way. Just do not stop because of one person.

My final piece of advice is that if you really, really cannot take criticism, why not create your own blog? Focus on what you love. Are you good at fitness and nutrition? Cooking? Are you good at anything to do with lifestyle? Are you good at saving money and couponing? Are you good with style, such as clothing, makeup, etc.?  Do you like to sell items? Create your own hours. Be your own boss. Work from anywhere. You might not get wealthy fast, but you just might be a success. Don't have the money to get started yet? Use Blogger for free until then. There are a ton of tutorials online, such as on Pinterest, to teach you how to create a blog. All you need to do is a little research.

Hopefully, this article has been of some use to you. I wanted to give you a little pep talk like I wish I had been given long ago.  Write on!
