Tips for Writing a Superb Blurb – Part 3

A blurb may be the shortest piece of writing you have to come up with for your novel, but it is one of the most important aspects of your novel. You need to get your blurb right to be able to capture the attention of your reader and ensure that your book flies off the shelves. The blurb is a short summary or a synopsis of your novel that has the potential to not only entice the reader but make it a great marketing tool as well.

Here are some tips that can help you write a blurb that convinces the reader to buy your book.

Stick To Your Genre

The blurb is there to give your readers an idea of the story and what they can expect from it. This is the reason why it is very important for you to maintain the same voice and tone as your novel. Keep it according to your genre; don’t make it sound too dramatic. You can easily make a thriller sound like a romance in your blurb, so make sure that the focus of your blurb remains true to your novel. This will not only bring in more genuine readers but also stop any potential bad reviews.

Always Keep Fresh Eyes On It!

When you think that you are satisfied with your blurb, set it aside for some time and give it some distance. Get back to it after a while and try to look at it with fresh eyes. Try to look at it from the perspective of a reader of the genre and see if there are any faults. Try to look beyond grammar and structure; look at it from different angles. If printing it out or reading it on your phone helps, you should do that as well.

Rewrite As Much As Is Needed

Your blurb is not something that you should treat as an afterthought. Give it some time because it will need revisions and your time. You can always begin by writing a summary in which you will add the basics of your plot, add your characters and other important elements of your story. When that is done, you can start cutting down things and trim down to a new version. Try to write as many versions of the blurb as possible and then choose the best. It is worth spending this time and energy on it.

Adding Quotes and Reviews

While giving an introduction of the story is a great way to grab the interest of readers, adding comments from the reviews of your novel can be a great way to pitch your novel to potential readers. You can have famous authors or even regular readers review your novel and ask them to give you constructive criticism. Anyone who gives a 5-star review to your book will have a few things that you can use in the blurb of your book. Add them in quotes and let them work their magic on your readers.
