What to Write about in Media and Entertainment

Media and entertainment is a very large field as it includes everything from celebrities to reporters to TV shows and movies. Because the field is so large, it is important for writers to focus their writing by topic and perspective. The writer should choose a specific perspective to write from. Some examples of perspectives are: reporter, actress, actor, stage crew, observer, script writer, director, and/or reader. In regards to the topic, the writer should choose a topic area that is not too wide or too narrow. Some examples are: children in the media, a specific TV or movie genre, celebrities, celebrity fails, reporters in the media, and/or how the media affects people.

Popular Topics

When it comes time for a writer to choose a topic to write on in the media and entertainment field, there are numerous popular topics. Popular topics in this category generally fall into two areas; either they are current events or they are topics with multiple angles for discussion. Current topics are the easiest to cover as a writer can easily find them using Google Trends. Discussion topics are a bit harder to find as they are not always right at the top of a Google Trends search. Instead, to find these topics a writer should look at blogs, social media, and the news to observe what topics are currently being covered.

All Time Favorites

While there are constantly new topics popping up all the time, there are some topics that typically remain popular because they do not have one clear answer. The lack of a clear answer causes readers to be interested in reading new perspectives and arguments on these topics. Five popular all-time favorite topics:

1. Is reality TV really real? How can viewers be sure that what they are watching is real and not scripted? Should reality TV be entirely script free or not? Why or why not? Should re-shoots be allowed? Why or why not?

2. Should there be more laws in place to protect children in the media and entertainment industry from being exploited? Should there be a minimum age for children to participate in reality TV? Why or why not? What should be done about parents that exploit their own children for popularity and money in the media and entertainment industry?

3. Should there be more laws in place to protect people from the paparazzi? Should people be able to refuse contact with the media? Should celebrities be allowed to file restraining orders on only individuals or new agencies as well? How much right does the public have to know about what goes on in the lives of celebrities?

4. What should be done about piracy in the media and entertainment industry? Should those that put the content online be punished if they are not making a profit? Should individuals who view the content be punished even if they did not pay for the content?

5. Should there be more censorship in the media? If yes, where should the line be drawn? Should reality TV shows be censored? If yes, to what degree? Should there be a way for people to have their TVs and computers censor out certain words and levels of violence?
