What to Write about in Sex and Gender
Sex and gender has grown into an enormous field to write about because there are so many new topics about sex and gender. The vastness of the topic means that a writer needs to narrow the sex and gender topic down by perspective and focus. Considering the potentially adult nature of the topic, it is important that a writer choose a focus and perspective that he or she is able to write about successfully. When choosing the perspective, a writer needs to choose a perspective that he or she already possesses; some examples of perspective would be someone who went through a gender crisis, someone who changed their gender, or someone that is homosexual or heterosexual. When choosing a focus, it is important that a writer chooses a focus that is not too broad or too limited. For instance, exploring all gender issues would be too broad, but choosing only to explore homosexuality in eighteen-years-olds would be too limited.
Popular Topics
The two main sex and gender topics that tend to be always be popular are debatable topics and current events related to sex and gender. Those interested in reading about sex and gender topics are generally interested in either current events that have to do with sex and gender, or debatable topics that have multiple viewpoints. Current events that involve sex and gender can generally be located through Google Trends while debatable topics can be located through the use of forums, social media, and gossip.
All Time Favorites
While there are always new topics appearing all the time in the field of gender and sex, those topics are typically about news events or news stories that are trending. Those topics generally require a decent amount of online searching, news watching, and paying attention to the media; and while these topics are generally popular, they also fade in popularity quickly as readers eventually lose interest. However, there are also argumentative or debatable topics that generally stay interesting to people because there are many different answers to the questions with no single clear answer. These answers are normally based on the perspective of the writer, which allows there to be numerous different answers to the same question without any wrong answers. Here are three popular arguments that people are typically interested in:
1. Should people be allowed to choose their own gender? When people choose to change their own gender are they gender confused or does one gender just resonate better with them? Is gender innate?
2. When parent(s) decide to adopt a child, they have to go through many steps, background checks, and safety checks to make sure that they are ready and able to be parents, yet none of these steps exist for parents who have biological children. Should there be a set of procedures parents have to go through before having their own biological child? Should the steps be the same as the ones adoptive parents go through?
3. At what age should a person be allowed to become transgender? Should there be a set age for a person to act as a different gender or just to make changes to their body to become transgender? What are the pros and cons of such a requirement? Is it ethical to impose limits or restrictions on a person changing their gender?
