Writers and the World of Wattpad
In the interest of full disclosure, I only hopped onto the Wattpad bandwagon about 18 months ago. I had heard of it but paid little attention to the global online storytelling behemoth that has revolutionized the way writers and readers connect. I'm pretty late to the party, given that it was launched in 2006, but now fully see its value as a creative ecosystem that empowers authors to share their work, grow their skills, and build a following.
The Appeal of Wattpad
For writers, Wattpad offers a low-barrier entry into the world of publishing. The platform supports a wide range of genres, from romance and fantasy to science fiction and non-fiction. Its user-friendly interface allows authors to upload chapters incrementally, making it ideal for serialized storytelling. This format pulls readers in and provides writers with built-in betas for ongoing feedback. Stories can gain traction quickly through a loop of shares, comments, and votes, and authors can directly interact with their readers.
Using Wattpad to Build a Writing Career
Authors leverage Wattpad in various ways to advance their careers:
1. Building an Audience: For new writers, Wattpad is a launchpad to reach a global audience. Many authors start with small followings that grow as their stories gain popularity. The platform’s algorithm and community-driven features amplify stories, potentially propelling unknown authors into the spotlight.
2. Testing and Improving Work: Wattpad is an excellent testing ground. Writers can experiment with ideas and styles, using reader feedback to fine-tune their stories. This process helps authors identify what works and what doesn’t before committing to full-scale publishing.
3. Gaining Industry Recognition: Some authors use Wattpad as a stepping stone to full-scale publishing or other media deals. The platform has partnerships with publishers, film studios, and streaming services through its Wattpad Books and Wattpad Studios arms. Successful stories, like Anna Todd’s After series, have transitioned from Wattpad to global bestsellers and film adaptations.
4. Monetizing Content: Wattpad’s Paid Stories program allows writers to earn money directly from their work. Additionally, the Wattpad Stars program connects authors with opportunities such as brand collaborations and commissioned writing projects.
5. Networking with Other Creatives: Wattpad encourages collaboration through writing contests, forums, and writer communities. Connecting with other authors helps writers hone their skills and expand their networks, opening doors to mentorships and partnerships.
Other Considerations:
While Wattpad has numerous benefits, it’s not without hurdles. The platform is highly competitive, with thousands of new stories uploaded daily. Standing out requires consistent updates, high-quality content, and savvy self-promotion. Additionally, some authors really do worry about copyright protection, although as an editorial reviewer, I think this concern is generally unnecessary and Wattpad does provide tools to help safeguard intellectual property.
On the whole, Wattpad has democratized storytelling, giving a solid space to authors from all walks of life. Whether used as a hobby, a stepping stone, or with an eye on a full career path, the platform offers myriad opportunities to connect, create, and succeed. For writers willing to engage with its vibrant community and work through its hiccups, Wattpad is a great way to go.
