A Cruise – The Perfect Vacation for Writers Part 1
It isn’t always easy to find time to write, let alone find the time that relaxes you and provides inspiration. In fact, sometimes, it is pretty much impossible because everything conspires against you, stopping you from finding the time you need. So, why not take a vacation? A cruising vacation to be quite precise. A cruise is a fantastic vacation that can provide writers with some inspiring results and here’s why.
No Internet!
Before we get into this one I know that some cruise lines do provide Wi-Fi packages on-board but these are not cost effective. Some people report very high fees and, when their packages run out, if they didn’t realize that their device was automatically connected to the net, they were being charged hundreds of dollars. Do yourself a huge favor – forget the extra internet package and forget that the internet exists for a few days.
Now, why should you, as a writer, be excited about not having internet? It’s simple – no internet means no distractions. No email, no Facebook, no Twitter. No breaking news popping up. No checking out Amazon to see what your rankings are. None of those things that we get sidelined by when we sit down to do some writing. None of those things that take your attention away from your writing.
Yes, there will be lots to distract you on-board the cruise ship but you also gain free time to write in some of the most beautiful and relaxing surroundings you could ever wish for. You can sit on the deck, gazing at the ocean while you think about tricky plot twists or flesh out your characters. You can do this sat on your balcony if you are lucky enough have one too. In fact, you can sit anywhere on a cruise ship and pick up plenty of inspiration and tips so don’t forget to take your trusty notebook with you. You never know when you might want to write a novel set on a cruise …
Free Food 24/7
How can this help you with your writing? Simple. You don’t have to stop when dinner needs cooking or to run to the shops to get the groceries in. You don’t need to worry about missing the meal times on the ship if you get stuck into your writing – that’s what room service is for. Most cruise ships offer a Lido deck too so if you need to get up and move about, head on up to yours. There should be a buffet and one or more restaurants open 24/7 so you can work to your heart's content and eat when you need to without sticking to a schedule.
Unpack Once For Many Places
Depending on where your cruise is going to, you will get to see so many different places that can provide you with ideas and inspiration. You normally get one day in each location before heading back to the ship without wasting time packing and unpacking your case. You don’t need to worry about missing connections, about checking in times because the ship is going to take you everywhere. That means you get more time to get down to work. And, if you can't get enough information about a place in the time available, you do have a decent head start and somewhere to start your research.
