Many authors these days choose to promote their works on social media platforms instead of the usual book launches or autograph signings that were popular back in the day. While those things may still be done now, more and more authors are realizing how helpful social media is when it comes to marketing books and establishing your profile as an author. So, why is it actually helpful? Listed below are some of the best reasons why.

  1. It doesn’t cost much. You’ll only need a computer/laptop or any other device that can connect to the internet, a stable internet connection, and some followers or fans online. You can then set up blog tours, guest posts, etc. without having to shell out a lot of money. It’s definitely a quick and easy way to promote your works and to promote yourself as an author.

  2. It lets people know about what you have been up to. Sometimes people want to know what an author is doing or if a certain author is working on a new project and the like. You may also let people know about your different kinds of projects, and about what you want to work on in the future. In a way, it makes you feel closer to them and it makes them feel closer to you.

  3. It makes you more “Google Worthy.” Nothing’s sadder than an author whom no one knows and a story that is so good and yet people do not have an idea that it exists. By being on social media and by getting in touch with bloggers or social media savvy people, your “search rank” on search engines such as Google will go higher. This means that people have more ways of finding you online and getting to know whatever it is that they need to know about you. This way, you will become more relevant and you can be sure that people will start reading your works.

  4. It lets you reach a wider audience. While it’s good to have family and friends who support you, it would also be good to be friends with people from all over the world. Case in point is John Green, the best-selling author of novels such as The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska. Green has a popular video blog called, “Vlogbrothers” which he made with his brother, Hank. In that channel, he and his brother post videos regarding their thoughts about anything and everything under the sun. Without it, he’d probably be “just another author without a big following.”

  5. And, of course, it has an impact on the amount that you get to sell. If people know about you and know about your work, then they will make it a point to buy your books and tell other people about you as well. This is a big sign that social media has been very effective when it comes to marketing your books.

Get on a social media platform as soon as possible and market your books to a wider audience—without using much of your money. It will definitely make a difference.
