Best Setting to Write about in Austin
In my article “Setting: Elements of Towns and Cities,” I wrote about how many writers believe a setting is merely a location; however, the setting is not just a location, but everything that would define a location as a place. The seven elements that a writer should focus on in setting are the local restaurants, local shops, local events, local activities/entertainment, culture, day/night differences, and people. The best settings serve to incorporate all of these seven elements throughout the story. One area that has an abundance of these seven elements is Austin, Texas.
Geography is the main setting among all. By creating a beautiful natural view and pleasant weather, Colorado River passes through the very heart of Austin. If in the afternoon the author wants a character to take a short trip to a nearby town with his or her companion, then a pleasant walk along the Colorado River would provide a romantic atmosphere. Lake Austin, Lake Walter E. Long, and Lady Bird Lake would also be perfect settings regardless if the author is creating a family feel or a romantic vibe. The Zilker Botanical Garden’s numerous trees and plant life offer a wonderful place for a character to get in tune with nature.
Culture is another main aspect of setting and it is one that Austin has in spades. Austin is a city of music and it is well known for being the Live Music Capital of the World. Since the 19th century, music has become a large part of the culture. Armadillo World Headquarter is a famous musical hub, which used to be known as the Vulcan, and offers a location for a character to enjoy the musical culture of the city.
Lifestyle is another necessary setting element and a key aspect of Austin. The lifestyle of Austin is quite active in regards to cars, pedestrians, and bikes. The city is well suited for travel by bike, walking, or public transportation as travel by car can lead to being stuck in traffic. Austin is well known for its diverse culinary offerings and many who travel to visit the city do so with a bucket list of foods and restaurants that they desire to try. The most sought-after restaurants are typically those that serve barbecue, Mexican, or health-conscious food options.
Local activities and entertainment resources include IFLY Indoor Skydiving, The Escape Game (one of the greatest attraction of this city), Top Golf, Peter Pan Mini Golf, Pinballz Arcade, 11th Hour Escape, Altitude Trampoline Park, Urban Air Trampoline Park, and Playland Skate to name a few.
Day and Night Life of Austin are vastly different as during the day the city is typically considered family-friendly and offers some good options. However, at night the city truly comes alive. Once the sun goes down, different entertainment options become available. At night, comedy clubs, gentlemen clubs, and theatres open their doors to those interested in pursuing the nightlife. Some options like Esther's Follies, a modern-day vaudeville theatre, are well suited for children and families while other entertainment options like the Crazy Lady, Palazio Gentlemen’s Club, and Pleasures Club LLC offer a different type of entertainment designed only for adults.
