Defining and Maintaining your Writing Routine
Creating and maintaining any productive habit can be difficult and many times frustrating. When established, however, these habits can be extremely beneficial in relation to adopting a more productive lifestyle. As a writer, it can be challenging to define a writing routine that works for you and also to maintain it amidst everything happening around you. This article is meant to provide help to writers who want to establish a routine that will give them enough time to work on their writing yet accommodate other activities that also matter.
Tip #1 Know what works for you
Being comfortable with the fact that what works for someone else may not work for you will save you a lot of unnecessary stress. Some people swear by waking up early but not all writers are morning people. Some prefer working during night hours as this is the time they feel most productive. Before starting a routine, you need to determine when you are most productive and maximize the number of hours you work during this time. Other periods of the day can be allocated to other less involving activities.
Tip #2 Keep it simple
You are more likely to follow a simple and flexible routine than a rigid one. As you start, incorporate one activity at a time and once you have established a routine doing one thing, then you can include another into your schedule. When you start off with too many responsibilities, the most likely thing that may happen is you will become overwhelmed and abandon the plan altogether. Additionally, only include activities that really matter. This way, you will keep your routine simple and you will be able to accomplish the responsibilities that really matter.
Tip #3 Define your goals
Defining your goals will help you create a routine that will lead you to success. It will also help you know what to include in your routine and what you should discard. Goal-setting is the most crucial stage as it helps you focus on what you want to achieve. As you set your goals, consider what is most important to you. This could range from building a stable financial future, working on your creativity or even allowing more time for social activities. The goals also need to be practical and measurable. Setting unattainable goals will work against you in your effort towards becoming successful.
Tip #4 Self will
Ultimately, what matters is actually getting down to work and doing what you planned to do. A routine without self-will will be no good. The best way to battle doubt and demotivation is to actually sit down and start. The first step is usually the hardest but the more you continue working on something, the easier it becomes. Another way to ensure that you stick to your routine is to ignore the days that you fail and just continue the following day without putting too much thought on your previous failure.
Even though establishing a suitable routine can be difficult, taking it a step at a time will ensure you remain motivated.
