Finishing What You Started - Part 2
Seek help
Sometimes you cannot do it alone and you may need help. Even though asking for help may require some amount of humility, sometimes it is the only way to move forward. In the end, you need to remember to put yourself first and take care of yourself. If you are feeling overwhelmed and you have someone in mind who may be able to help, it is important to remember that it is okay to ask for assistance. Get a competent person who can take over the less important tasks as you work on what you think is crucial.
Remind yourself of the reward at the end
In the middle of a hectic schedule when trying to complete the work you had intended to, it is easy to forget why you are doing what you are in the first place. The situation becomes even more unclear when obstacles start to appear. This is the point when you need to remind yourself of the reward of completing the work. This may take different forms, but ultimately it should encourage you to keep working up to the end. If it is a significant project, you can consider having a visual reminder of the coming prize.
Work on the flaws at the end
Editing your work at the end may not be suitable for everyone but I found that when you want to take less time and you are excited about an idea, it helps to only look at the flaws at the end. If you are too cautious, you become fixated on what you are doing wrong which derails your progress. Additionally, when you continuously edit your piece as you go, you take more time which can be discouraging if you expected the task to be less time-consuming. After completing, you will be excited that the task is already done and what remains is the editing part. Even though some people say that the editing process is the most difficult, I think completion of an article or book is the first major accomplishment. It is easy to give up when writing than when you have already gotten to the editing part.
Pick and choose projects that you are excited about
Do not just follow the masses, select what appeals to you. It is certain that we are more productive when working on something that we love. It takes us less time and less effort. If you can afford to, only take up tasks that you would love to work on. If you cannot, start with what you love best as this will take less time. You will also feel more enthusiastic about working on the next piece after you are done with the initial ones.
In the end, there are different ways you can ensure that you complete what you started. Taking small steps at a time and making sure you do not get distracted or discouraged along the way are some of the most important. It also takes some level of determination. Still, it can be done.
