Good Habits For Freelance Writers
Welcome to adult elementary school. Yes, we were taught skills in elementary school, such as proper English and manners. Back in elementary school, I was in a program for creative writing. However, I was never taught good habits for such a task. As I thought about the contents of this article, I taught myself. I kind of made this a listicle, as people remember things better in lists. Ready?
Change scenery. Tired of your office? Go to the kitchen table, the library, the local McDonald’s, etc. Laugh. Studies show that a good belly laugh is very healthy. Look for jokes online and spread the laughter. Exercise. Get those feel-good endorphins flowing. Do not let your job as a writer cause you to be sedentary. Deep-breathing techniques. Just let go of the stress. Shave. Ladies, this goes for you also. Are your legs and armpits looking like the Amazon? Text quotes to friends and family, whether inspirational, motivational or religious.
Start a journal. Are you an introvert? This journal could be your accountability partner, such as for gratitude, food, fitness, whatever you like. Go through emails in the morning. Too much email weighs one down all day if not sorted through. Meal plan. Plan weekly meals on Sunday. Use a crockpot throughout the week. Oil diffuser. I do not have one, but I want one. The smells are so enticing. I probably would not want to leave my house. Get more work accomplished. Wash your face and put on make-up. I read a book years ago where the author said her mother always told her to do this. I forget the name of the book, but always remembered what she said to do. Get up, dress up, show up. I saw this quote online some time ago. I think of the quote when I really, really do not want to go out.
Keep snacks stashed in your desk drawer. Since I work from home, I do not do this as it is easy for me to dash to the kitchen. But, if you are out there in a cubicle, I feel for you. Have a drink station. I have a Keurig station in my office. My fridge is stocked with bottled water, lemonade and diet cola. Keep yourself hydrated! Get some vitamin D… a little sun and fresh air… a little rejuvenation. Turn on an audiobook at bedtime to keep the creative juices flowing. There are times though, where I myself fall asleep while listening. But, they say this is still healthy doing so. Reward yourself as your body is going to love you for it. Go online and window shop. Create wish lists and tell yourself that payday is coming.
Now were these that hard? As Joyce Meyer frequently says, you may not be there yet, but at least you are not where you used to be. Even intelligent writers need a little common sense prodding every once in a while. Anyway, make some good habits and watch yourself soar.
