Growth Tips for the Beginner - Part 3

Say yes often

Try saying yes to different opportunities. Do not let fear hold you back. There are so many times I have said yes and it has turned out great, better than I had envisioned. Saying yes can be fearful. You do not want to get disappointed when you fail. Worse still, you might realize that you are not as good as you thought. Still, you will never know what you can do by limiting yourself. I have learned to say yes as much as I can and then work on the finer details later. The moment you commit, you are more likely to figure out how to do something than when you are still figuring out whether you should do it.

Take small but significant steps

Have a mantra, commit to writing a few sentences a day, set a specific number of pages to read every day or listen/watch a session that helps you write better. These are some of the ways you can better your writing. They are simple but sticking to them will drastically improve your craft. In a few years’ time, you will be able to notice the changes in your writing. Keeping it simple helps you to remain focused and consistent. Do not take gigantic steps that could easily discourage you.

Pay attention to titles

A good title is as important as great content. Coming up with creative titles will help you make your work extraordinary and appealing. Start with a great title that fits the rest of the book. You can add a subtitle if you need to elaborate more on what the book is about. Great titles are short, specific and fun. They should have an intriguing element that arouses the reader’s curiosity and entices them to read the rest of the content.

Take your time if you can

Do not be in a rush to get published. Take your time and make your book the best that you possibly can. Do not write hurriedly, it always shows in your writing. A reader can tell when the author took time to develop the right story and characters and when they did not. By taking your time, you will have the assurance that you did everything that you could even if the book was not a success. Writing purposefully will likely contribute to higher chances of success than writing in a rush.

Have fun

You can master all there is to writing, but it is passion for the job that will sustain you. Writing can be brutal and many times there are rejections upon rejections to be experienced. Do not let go of your dream too easily, though. Just keep at it and have fun. Allow yourself to be creative. Where limitations exist, make the most out of each opportunity. Keep writing and moving forward. True writers do not give up; they dust themselves off and learn from failures. Just get started; there is something to lose but there is much more that can be gained.
