How to Get Over Writer's Block

Many writers end up suffering from writer’s block at some point in their writing career. It is simply a normal part of writing that the writer at some point, or at multiple points, runs out of things to write, does not know what to write next, or loses their inspiration. As a writer, it is best to make peace with the fact that at some point you will suffer from writer’s block; however, that does not mean you have to let it stop you, destroy your writing career, or lose your inspiration forever. There are different strategies for dealing with writer’s block that can help a writer to overcome their writer’s block successfully!

Strategy 1: Take a Break and Relax

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” (John Lubbock, The Use Of Life)

Sometimes writer’s block can occur because the writer is trying to do too much too fast without any time to just relax. As John Lubbock writes, resting is not idleness. In truth, relaxing is a vital part of the writing process in order to avoid burnout. Sometimes all you need to do to get over your writer’s block is to take a few hours or a day to do sometime relaxing that is unrelated to writing in any way. After a time of relaxation, the ideas will be able to flow better and the rest and relaxation will rejuvenate your mind.

Strategy 2: Write about Something Else

Sometimes the best way to get over your writer’s block is to turn your focus away from whatever you are currently working on and focus on writing something entirely different. Some writers have found that starting an entirely new writing project on a completely different topic can enable them to overcome their writer’s block on the old writing topic. For example, you are trying to write a magical fantasy book when writer’s block strikes. Instead of stopping writing entirely, try writing a book of short stories for children or a historical fiction novel instead. Sometimes overcoming writer’s block is just a matter of allowing your mind to stop focusing on one topic long enough for a new idea to pop up.

Strategy 3: Find New Inspiration

Writer’s block can occur due to the writer’s source of inspiration no longer being inspirational. When this happens, instead of focusing your efforts on continuing to find inspiration in something you no longer find inspiring, you should instead try to find new inspiration. If you take inspiration from people, then go out and meet some new inspiration in new people, or if you take inspiration from places then take a road trip and look for a place that gives you that needed inspiration again. Just do not keep trying to find inspiration somewhere it is not. Instead, be proactive - go out and find new inspiration for yourself!
