How to Start a Podcast!
Creating a podcast to market your genre is a great marketing technique. Anchor.com provides easy access to the podcast world. It can record from a phone or computer, and suprisingly does have great sound quality. Otherwise, the technical devices such as a microphone and software can get expensive. Anchor.com is a great avenue that dodges the cost of creating a podcast. My podcast on Anchor is called The A+ Life by Alexandra Jensen. What I have found is that the more you record and create episodes, the better your tracks become. I would say that a good podcast length is 10-20 minutes. Some sermons can stretch to 30. It all depends on your genre.
Your podcast must include some sort of trademark. Mine is that of the sound of glass breaking. Before each episode, this pre-recorded sound occurs. Another trademark is the image that goes along with each episode is the same. Consistency is key.
Be super enthusiastic! No one wants to listen to a monotone speaker delivering a drab message. If you are not hyped up and excited about what you are saying, the listener will not be either. You want to develop a following, so hooking and keeping listeners is salient to the success of your podcast.
Podcasting is fun. I personally enjoy podcasting very much. This suprised me at first, because I have always been an author but never a speaker. Speaking is a great way to develop publicity around your book. Your speaking journey can begin with podcasting, like it did mine.
Script or no script? Before I record an episode, I create an outline. Your outline should include a title, the various points you would like to make, and also several pre-thought out punchlines. Create a few memorable quotes beforehand. Include your best punchline when you share your podcast episode on social media. Creat a fabulous hashtag that you use for all of your works. Mine is #AplusLifeinChrist. Remember, consistency is key!
Have fun with it. Be yourself. Your personality is what makes you and your podcast unique. Don't sound like a robot. This is one of the biggest turn-offs to listeners. Remember, you are a professional! Sound like it. Be yourself, with no shame. Your listeners will appreciate this. Not all people are going to like your podcast. That is okay. Such is life. You cannot please all of the people, all of the time. No matter what someone thinks, your following will conform to you. You do not have to mold your work to please potential listeners. Audiences appreciate bold, unique messages. That being said, let your work be unique. Speak about relevant topics that you know very well. If you are a niche market, that's awesome! Sport it strong. The only way to survive and thrive in a niche market is to stay true to you, and stick with it!
One final note, ask people to leave you reviews, and to rate your podcast episodes. This will definitely increase your odds!
