How Writers Can Keep Earning Under the Pandemic (Part 2 of 2)

They find that stories unrelated to the coronavirus are still in demand.

The world continues to turn and life goes on. If you look at online job boards and wanted ads in social media, jobs for writers to pen non-pandemic related articles are alive and pulsing. While certain coverage has become limited, the opportunities to write for sustainability remain open. Editors tweet or post messages that they are looking for personal narratives or articles that are not related to the coronavirus, as some of them feel it has already been done to death or being milked too much. Moreover, writers can tap into their editing and proofreading skills as these jobs remain high in demand too.

They find out what businesses are looking for.

Businesses are trying to recoup their losses from the pandemic. Many of them require contingency measures for effective communication while working remotely and how they can reach out to customers.

For example, one of my writer contacts has found a lucrative gig writing a script for a real estate company offering a virtual tour of the houses they offer for sale. Her gig requires a description of condominiums, townhouses, and mansions. Customers can take a virtual tour of the estates online where the spoken narration is courtesy of the script she wrote.

They connect with executives, founders, investors, and business owners on LinkedIn.

Why not? Instead of spending your time taking selfies under quarantine and posting on Facebook, why not connect with people who are potential catalysts for social and economic change? These are the people that you can pitch to and have the money to spend for well-written content.

Aside from that, they have opinions that get streamed or shared in different media. They are good analysts on the social, economic, and political panorama and know what will happen in the future of their respective industries. Reach out to them and get to know what they do and what you can do for them. It’s a win-win situation, and you may well find yourself becoming instrumental in reshaping a particular industry.

They create accounts on popular writing platforms to find gigs.

Freelance writing is not a hobby. You’re in charge of making the most out of your time. Offering your content-writing skills to content platforms can help give you that much-needed side income. Do peruse carefully the platforms you intend to work with. Some of them are run-of-the-mill content providers that pay low, while others are very selective when it comes to screening writers. See if this method of streaming income appeals to you.

Finally, they write as if their lives depend on it.

Write every day and write something new. In her book, Everybody Writes, Ann Handley said that writing is a habit, not an art. She stated that the key to being a better writer is to be a more productive one. Write to be consistent, and there is no better time to be consistent than these challenging times. That consistency is what will make your writing productive.
