Key Attributes of a Successful Freelancer
Apart from the writing skills required to be a great freelancer, there are many attributes that help in achieving success as a freelance writer. Some of them are obvious but harder to achieve while others are easier to attain.
One of the most important attributes that any writer should have is confidence. Given the competition that is out there, it takes confidence to constantly put your work out there and get judged. As a freelancer, one is always seeking out new opportunities and ways to better their craft and confidence; in this case, confidence becomes indispensable. As a beginner, it is hard to know where to start and who to approach. As one grows in their career, they learn what they are good at and which niche markets are best for them. Still, freelancing requires confidence in one’s ability to constantly engage and convince.
The ability to organize one’s schedule and the achievement of discipline while working are other great attributes that every freelancer needs to have. Keeping in mind that there will not be anyone to be accountable to, discipline is definitely crucial. A good way of remaining organized is to keep a to-do list and minimize possible distractions. Having a designated area whose sole purpose is to allow you to work peacefully is a consideration that every freelancer needs to make. An organized schedule that reminds you of pending tasks and what you need to achieve for every specific working day is a great way to achieve success.
Having the ability to communicate effectively with clients or anyone else is obviously important. Email and phone etiquette should be high on any freelancer’s list on the attributes that they need. A lot of communication happens through email and hence the importance of learning relevant communication skills. While using email for communication may not afford you the benefits of a one-on-one conversation, it gives you the time to think through replies and construct well thought out feedback. Since you may never meet your clients, it is important to always remember that how you present yourself via email is the only side that most clients will ever see of you.
Creativity will help you stand out among others. Presenting work that includes a bit of your own style is a great way to add uniqueness to your work. Creativity could also mean presenting work that meets the needs of the clients better than they had hoped for. Having the client and their needs in mind always helps in putting out content that is appealing. Creativity also works in selling your work on social media platforms. Think of it as a way to advertise what you have to offer and enticing different markets for them to buy what you are selling. This may mean researching different platforms and creating advertising content that best suits what you are trying to convey.
Everyone learns at different paces and patience is crucial in the freelancing business. Adopting simple steps in developing yourself with regard to different attributes, in the end, will set you on the path to winning.
