Mythical Monsters and Creatures of Chile

In How to Write a Unique Spooky Story, I wrote about how to write a unique spooky story by either creating your own monster, creature, or horror yourself or by finding a monster that is not well known. I advised finding a monster by researching myths and legends in other cultures to find something that has a rich history surrounding it, but that is not considered modern. One of the countries that have some unique myths is Chile. Chile is a long, narrow country that stretches along South America's western side, and its capital Santiago is located in a valley and is surrounded by mountains.

Trauco

Trauco is a twisted and ugly dwarf with stumps for feet and wears a cone upon his head; his only method of communication is grunting though he has been known to understand human languages. This dwarf is far from benevolent as he makes the darkest of forests his home and he has been known to attack and steal the virginity of the women who trespass in what he considers to be his abode. It is believed that he also has the ability to control the dreams of women to trick them into trespassing in his forest home.

Fiura

Fiura is a short and ugly witch who wears a dress made from moss and has breath so foul that one whiff causes her victim to faint. She utilizes her magic to make herself into the most beautiful of temptresses in order to lure single men into her bed. Fiura has never taken a man who is already in love nor any man in a committed relationship. When she becomes bored with her companion, she becomes wrathful and curses them with insanity. No man has ever been known to leave Fiura's home with his sanity intact. It is rumored that Fiura is searching for a man that will love her without the use of her enchantment and only that man will ever leave her home with his sanity intact.

La Pincoya

La Pincoya is a more benevolent creature who appears as a beautiful woman sitting upon the sea or the shore. If she is spotted facing the sea then fishermen are blessed with a plentiful catch; yet if her back is turned to the sea the fishermen will find themselves struggling to catch any fish.

Huenchula

Huenchula was once a human girl who fell in love with the King of the Sea and when he returned her love, he turned her into a sea spirit so that she could live beside him. Huenchula is believed to be one of the earliest environmentalists as she created rules for how shellfish could be taken from the sea and has been known to bless those that follow the rules while cursing those that fail to heed her rules. Her rules are:

1. Shellfish are to be taken out by hand

2. Fishermen are not to fight over the shellfish

3. Wheel-barrels and trucks are forbidden

4. Take only the shellfish that you both need and will use.
