Nature's Muse: The Nymph

There’s no doubt nature is important. What with the environment being the center of politics, war, and even civil unrest, many people have come to respect and appreciate the resources that the earth provides. Musicians, artists, and writers can find nature refreshing, majestic. Nature’s beauty is even recorded in history and religion, from deities crafting each tree meticulously, to mythical creatures playing in the laurel bushes. However, there is one creature who serves as a foundation for these depictions. This creature is known as the nymph.

The nymphs blossomed from Greek legend. They were often portrayed as beautiful young women who enjoyed singing and dancing. They were also regarded as minor deities, known to accompany other gods and goddesses, such as Hermes, Pan, or even Artemis. Although nymphs are usually solitary in nature, they can be encountered by different travellers who stumble across their music. However, these encounters could bring misfortune, since they’ve been known to cause strokes or bouts of insanity. Many stories were written about them, from the nymph who ran from Apollo’s affections, to the nymph who was punished by Hera simply because she talked too much, to even the tragic tale of Echo and Narcissus.

Despite their playful nature, nymphs can symbolize two different types of standards people held women to back then. For instance, because of their youth and beauty, nymphs were believed to be innocent, and usually represented a woman's purity. However, nymphs were also seen as sexual, and can sometimes symbolize women who are morally loose. In fact, the term nymphomaniac was used to describe people who were considered sexually addicted. Another well-known depiction was through the motif known as the sleeping nymph, which was often used in Renaissance paintings. This continued to be a popular depiction throughout the fifteenth century, and though the motifs of the paintings have changed, the sleeping nymphs are nevertheless enduring.

Although they are associated with forests, nymphs have been seen in other instances. For example, the Pleiades constellations are usually considered to be celestial nymphs, was well as the Atlantides. The nymphs of the River Styx aid in the ferrying of the souls to the underworld. Nymphs such as Orphene and Leuce are known for their association with Hades, some of which have even acted as love rivals towards Persephone. Nymphs were also found in rivers and mountains, and very rarely will they be seen associating with the divine.

The nymphs have been used as muses for many artists and writers. Paintings such as Hylas and the Nymphs, Diana and Acetaeon, and Diana and Callisto, as well as books such as The Nymph’s Labyrinth by Danica Winters and The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, have used these nymphs to paint a more wholesome picture with humanity. Such depictions have continued to illustrate just how influential nymphs have become in popular literature. But more than that, nymphs have also served as a reminder of the past, and how it continues to inspire us today.
