On Publishers and Book Stores

Books have been taking the world by storm in recent years. More and more people are interested in reading, and even though e-books are a more viable option, people still look forward to holding a book in their hands and flipping the pages eagerly as they read through them. Bookstores also tend to get big profits, although it usually stems from other products they sell, like school supplies and stationery.

Businessmen have taken notice, and there are more bookstores right now than there ever were. It’s hard to go into a mall without seeing several bookstores all bunched up in one area. Publishers are also taking advantage, since more and more books are going on shelves from a wide variety of authors.

A bookstore, like any other store, is more of a retail outlet. Bookstores get all the books from a publishing house at a wholesale price, and sell them to the public at a mark-up. Bookstores also invest in selling other products, like school supplies and stationery, where they tend to make more money. The publishing house, on the other hand, only gets their money from the books they sell to bookstores. They may not make the amount of money they could if they sold the books themselves. This begs the question: should book publishers open book stores?

Book publishers should think about opening their own bookstores. This makes having a bookstore very viable for publishing houses. They get to market their books within their own bookstore, while at the same time getting all the profits for themselves. It also allows them to sell all the books they publish without having people look at books from other publishers.

Authors also benefit from book publishers opening their own book stores. If people flock to a book store that’s been opened by a publishing house, it gives authors who are under contract with that publishing house a chance to interact with their fans. They can get feedback from the people who determine the success of their works.

Aspiring authors can also take advantage of publishing houses that open their own book store because they no longer have to go directly to the publishing house to pitch their work. They can also see if the publishing house they want is the one they need, because if the book store is doing well, it’s a good indication that the publishing house is also doing well.

They can ask the management of the publishing house for a lateral promotion to the book store, or have the book store feature some of the products they’ve been working on inside the store.

A book publisher can then help their own company grow, they can help authors write better books, but most of all, it gives their employees a chance to explore other aspects of working for a book publisher.
