Personal Branding for Writers - Part 2
Maximize social media benefits
When you start to realize the opportunities afforded by social media platforms, you start taking the whole experience a bit more seriously. The avenues become a place to market your work and not just the go-to place for venting. Depending on how active you are, social media can be a great way to present your skills and land major clients. Among your circles, there could be someone who is in need of your services and who you can connect with through the platform. Request close friends to share your work with their friends. In the end, you will be able to connect with more people than you initially thought possible.
Look out for guest posting opportunities
In case you have not had your work published before, you can look out for guest posting opportunities in exchange for exposure. While submitting your work, include a link to your blog on your bio. Also, mention other sites you write for or contribute to. This way, every reader who is intrigued with your work will be able to follow you on your own blog. Choose blogs whose content is similar to yours such that readers will be interested in what you have to offer if your content is not too different.
Have a ready portfolio at hand of your work
Most clients will want to see projects you have already worked on before. Make sure you select the best of the best of your past work. Also, consider organizing your portfolio in a way so that it will serve a specific niche as opposed to generalizing. Organizing your work as a last minute attempt to land a client is usually stressful. You also easily approach new clients when you have a well-organized portfolio that you can easily hand out when required.
Build your customer service skills
Remember your etiquette; professionalism appeals. Listen attentively and reply promptly. Show your clients that you care about your work and the final output. Be sure to understand what they are looking for and communicate effectively. If you are unable to complete the allocated work, communicate as soon as you can. Also offer professional advice, not in an authoritarian voice, but in a way that will entice the client to be more open to your suggestions. Write well and offer quality work, and remember why you keep going back to the same brand? The same case here; you want your clients to always come back to you. Differentiate yourself from others in the market by offering well-crafted work completed in a timely manner.
Stay abreast with current trends
New gets old fast in our ever-changing world. Keep yourself informed on the changing dynamics in the industry and capitalize on your knowledge to gain even better opportunities. Constantly educate yourself. Look out for seminars, free or affordable courses and content to develop your skills. There is a ton of information out there on anything under the sun that is free and accessible to anyone ready to learn.
Building a personal brand takes time but, with patience and consistency, a lot can be achieved.
