Quick Ways to Relax your Mind as a Writer- Part 2
Take time off social media
The demand placed on our minds as we process different information constantly starts to slow us down and becomes a source of stress. The shift of focus as you try to multitask between different activities also places a strain on our mental capacity. Shutting down social media or any other form of communication until you are done with what you want to achieve during a particular time period helps us to achieve our day’s goals faster and with less mental stress.
Take deep breaths slowly
Deep breaths significantly reduce stress especially when you take in every breath consciously and slowly. As you do this exercise, ensure there are no distractions around you. As you breathe in, take time and exhale in a slow rhythm. The exercise can be done anywhere, whether at your desk or even in an interview room or before you read an anticipated email. When stressful thoughts start to plague your mind, you can use this tool to effectively reduce your stress levels and relax your body and mind.
Listen to slow calming music
Calming music positively affects your mind and helps you to relax. You can save some of your favorite uplifting songs on your phone so that you can easily access them. This is an easy way of calming your mind as you can listen to music on your earphones in many environments. You could listen to your list of favorite jams on the bus, in a café or anywhere you are able to save a few minutes for yourself.
Have a hot drink
On cold days, getting out of bed and starting the day’s activities may not be an easy process for everyone. Keeping yourself warm after waking up with a hot drink of your favorite beverage will give you something to look forward to. Also dressing in warm clothes to retain body heat goes a long way in ensuring you remain active and comfortable when working.
Take a bath or a long hot shower
This may not be accessible to everyone but if you work from home or you can spare a few moments before going to work, take a bath to relax your mind. Taking a bath after a long day of work and stressful events will help you relax your body. This activity can be combined with others including listening to music or reading your favorite novel.
Take a nap
This is another option that may not be available for everyone but if you can, take a nap in between your day to rest your mind and increase your capacity for the remainder of the day. If you cannot take a nap due to the nature of your job, consider taking one during the weekends especially before the beginning of a new week.
Self-care is as important to a writer as for anyone else in another profession. Taking time to take care of the mind is essential in increasing productivity, not only in the short term but also for longer periods of time. Do not dismiss the effects these simple activities have on your mind. Everyone needs to slow down from time to time and take care of themselves.
