Some Travel Writing Basics

Travel has become not only a major part of our lives today but almost a basic one. As more young people put their resources towards experiences as opposed to possession of material things, there is a growing movement of travelers wishing to explore the world and experience the uniqueness and beauty of diversity.

Showcasing the local culture and cuisine is truly among the most basic aspects of travel writing. When most travel readers, if not all, pick up a travel magazine or visit a travel blog, they are attracted to it by the potential of learning something new. Since one of the reasons for travel is the immersion of oneself in a different culture and community, it goes without saying then that the unique elements of your trip that make that part of the world stand out should be the centerpiece of your article.

Specific statements made by locals, their gestures, attitudes such as their take on life, whether their life is fast-paced or slower than what you are used to will make your article pop. You can also include words from the local language that left an impression on you, of course, accompanied by their meaning.

It is important to further confirm these descriptions and explanations. The last thing you want is a random reader claiming that the meaning you have attached to a specific word or cultural practice is downright wrong. Probably a way of counterchecking words would be to use them in different scenarios and check whether they mean the same thing to different people.

Focus also on showing and relating experiences rather than listing and telling. Let the reader imagine being there on a trip. A great way to enhance this is to write in the first person. This adds a personal touch to your writing rather than when an article is written from the third person position. If the visit did not match your expectations with regard to the people’s standard of living, the infrastructure, the service you received, it is not very wise to record all the negative elements of your trip in your article. You do not want to sound whiny. Instead, bring out the beauty and the most enjoyable events that you experienced

Start with a punch or make your first line striking. Writing rules still apply. Even if you had a great experience, it still takes a bit of writing skill to capture and hold your audience. In the first paragraph, share some reasons why and how you chose your travel destination. Speak of what gripped your attention from the moment you landed.

Be detailed but also edit your work to exclude non-impactful moments. You can include descriptions or even recipes of local dishes as well as important tips for readers considering traveling to the same place that you did. Share tips on appropriate attire to take along, cultural norms such as what is considered rude or impolite or even different practices that a tourist will find interesting.

Happy writing as your share your magical moments!
