The Traits Of A Writer

I have been a writer now for over twenty years and in all that time I have experienced many lows and many highs. But the truth is I just kind of fell into writing. A friend of mine had just returned from working in Hollywood where he met the creator of a film called Fern Gully. I do not know whether anyone remembers it, but it was an animated film that did quite well at the box office. It was at that time I realized that writing could be an actual job. So I began writing, very badly at first, and then over time I learned my trade and gradually improved and was confident enough to send some of my work to magazines and publishers. So what pearls of wisdom have I gathered along the way? Here are just a few.

Don't be overprotective of a single word you write. Everything you have created is open to criticism, review, and change by the publisher or agent. There may be some storylines that you are determined to keep and that is your right, but remember your focus and aim is to get your work published so always have an open mind to feedback. If you are unwilling to change a single word of your manuscript then you could be in trouble.

If you are the sensitive sort of person that doesn’t like your work being criticised or rejection, then writing definitely is not for you. If, however, you can read a rejection email, take in the feedback constructively, then you have the character to become a writer. There is no place for tears or tantrums, so take the feedback, however harsh, and continue pushing forward.

An engaging idea is key. It is obvious that even the finest novel will fall by the wayside if the idea or concept is not strong. But if the concept is unique it will hook the publisher's interest and with a few minor writing tweaks you should have a positive response.

Remember to believe in yourself. Market yourself as well as your work. If you don’t know how then learn. Keep in mind there are probably less talented writers than you that are doing well. That is because they have learned to market themselves and have mastered the art of the query letter and logline. Be yourself and if someone doesn’t like you then worry not, there are many more publishers and agents out there, but only one of you. Only work with people who inspire you to be better than you are.You need to surround yourself with people who share your vision and passion.

You are a writer for the love of the art, but remember you also need to make money from your work. So choose an agent that can get you an advance on your work. Agents who promise no upfront payment but higher back end payments are worthless so avoid them.

There is no magic method to write; everyone has their different rituals that work best for them. So find your way and stick to it. If you write best sitting in a comfy chair then do it. There are no rules.

Finally, when success arrives, embrace it and enjoy the moment because you have earned it.
