The World of the eBook: What You Need to Know
An eBook is simply an electronic copy of a book. You pay and then download an eBook and then you can start to read instantly, this is one of the many benefits. You can read the book on a tablet, smart phone, and e-reader device so there are many available options out there. Coupled with this is the fact that it is an extremely convenient way to read and also in most cases cheaper than a printed book. So eBooks have most definitely revolutionised the way in which the world reads and the way in which books are published.
It has also completely opened up the market to aspiring authors and has given them an outlet for their work, especially when the world of mainstream publishing is unreachable. Authors can now be their own publishers. Here are a few things you need to know which can help you on your way.
First, the quality of an eBook should be the same quality as a traditionally published book. There are many badly written eBooks out there, so make sure that yours is not one of them by doing the same groundwork as for a printed novel. Proofread your work and get it copy edited if needed. If you need to pay someone for this service then do so; it is well worth the investment. You do not want your book to be let down by grammatical errors and typos. Produce the best quality material that you can.
Once you have finished your book, you then need to convert it into a digital and compatible file, either by yourself or by having a professional to do this for you. This very much depends on personal budget. If you can afford to have your book digitally converted then go for it; it will be worth the money. However, if you can’t afford this option then you can find an online publishing platform to help you. There are many of them out there. A few include Lulu, Smashwords and CreateSpace. They all offer online advice on how to convert your word.doc file or can offer in house packages to help with this at varying prices.
You need to create a book cover for your book even though it is digital. Again, you can do this yourself by using Photoshop or by hiring a graphic designer. Many of the online publishing platforms also offer either a paid book cover deign option or a free option where you can choose from varying templates and designs. Your book cover is very important.
Lastly, you need to know how to market your book and where it will be sold. Do you want to sell on Amazon for example? Depending on your chosen sales channels, this will impact upon who you choose to publish with, so find this information out before you begin.
There are many options open out there for authors wanting to publish an eBook. Have a look round and find out which is best for you.
