Thinking of Becoming a Digital Nomad? Read This Before You Leap (Part 2 of 2)

3. Do you have travel insurance?

Let’s face it. It’s hard to move these days without insurance. Accidents and illnesses happen when we least expect it. With the world as your office, health and safety should be a major concern. Good insurance must cover you wherever you choose to go. Take your time to research and find the best insurance deal that will represent your best interests as a nomad writer. Moreover, get the insurance that will also cover accidents. The world may be beautiful, but it is also a harsh place. Better safe than sorry.

4. Have you heard of a credit monitoring service?

This is a type of service that helps to monitor your finances back home. A credit monitoring service gives you regular updates and alerts regarding the status of your funds. Coordinate with your bank and tell them about your career plans.

5. Have you done thorough research about the digital nomad lifestyle?

Join digital nomad communities. It helps to ask and get ideas from those who have been there. Ask them about their highs and lows. Remember that you will be doing this on your own, and it helps to have community support that will provide you with that much-needed encouragement when you feel like slinking back into your office cubicle.

Expats, travel writers, and nomadic entrepreneurs all have a story to share. These people can give you tips and advice and recommend places to visit. They know the best places and affordable hotels and stay-ins. Over time, you will be imparting your share of experiences and adventures to emerging digital nomads as well.

6. Have you thought about managing your expenses during your travels?

Depending on your budget, if you decide on visiting one place after another, do your research and find the most affordable stay-ins. Find the cheapest hotels, or hostels. Some digital nomads also stay with host families for specific periods. Study the local food and try local cuisines. What may be palatable to one culture may be unappetizing for another. If you have a knack for food tripping however, this won’t be a problem.

7. Do you have enough discipline to manage your own time?

When you are working in front of your laptop, are you often distracted with games or cat videos? Managing your own time does not mean you are free to shoot the breeze whenever you feel like it. You still need to stick to your timetable. It’s easy to pour more time into pleasure than work, and we tend to get so carried away that we don’t notice it.

On the other hand, too much work can stress you out. If you have been traveling and are constantly pulling out your laptop to write or give your clients an update to the point that it alienates you from the world you are exploring, try to stop and rethink. Adjusting to a nomadic lifestyle can be overwhelming when you have been conditioned to work in a cubicle that dictates you to keep working while you constantly wait for the clock to strike 5.

Maintain a balance between work and leisure. If one dominates the other, it defeats the purpose of your new lifestyle as a digital nomad.

There will be many challenges. Digital nomadism is not for everyone. Many people still prefer the traditional office work setup as they do not worry about financial security and their preference is to stick to one place. The important thing is to analyze your lifestyle and needs. Knowing yourself is the first step toward plunging into a new lifestyle.
