Tips for Writing Christian Non-Fiction
Christian non-fiction writing is more complex than it sometimes appears to be. The challenge with this genre is that not only do you have to have an attractive theme but it also needs to be accurately and captivatingly written. Most Christian authors make the mistake of thinking that just because they have a great idea, their book will automatically sell. This is not true. While having a great message is the first step to writing a great Christian non-fiction book, the need for good writing is also equally important. This and more aspects of writing engaging Christian work are discussed in this article.
Start with a Great Idea
This is almost always the foundation for any non-fiction book. Your idea may not be new but the way you present it and the angle you approach the topic with is a key aspect when coming up with the theme for your book. Think of ways you can revamp common topics. You can also choose to zero in on a specific area of a wide topic. Instead of discussing the love of God, you can choose to concentrate on the love of God for the addict. Another way is by replacing common phrases with unique ones. As an alternative to the title, the love of God, you can rephrase it as, the pursuing nature of God’s love. This way, your writing will be fresh and exciting and your topics will suggest that the content contains something different from what has been written before.
Match the Idea with Great Writing
Some writers feel that readers interested in the genre should automatically pick their books. However, like any other genre, Christian books need to capture the attention of the reader and show the reader why they should pick that particular book.
The work should also be appealing and should connect with the reader emotionally. Readers want writing they can see themselves in and that they can learn from. They want to read work from authors who understand their struggles yet inspire them to grow from their experiences and move forward.
This brings us to another important feature that many authors overlook; tone. When authors separate themselves from their writing and the experiences of their audience, they fail to relate to readers, which makes the work less attractive. One way to ensure you reach your audience is to use the right tone. This does not mean that the work should not correct or admonish but it should do so in a way that the reader will feel inspired not just condemned.
It is easy to get distracted when writing non-fiction and include unrelated details of the topic you are discussing. When writing, always keep the theme in mind and remember to only include what will help you in discussing the laid-out topic. Moving to other unrelated discussions confuses the reader and obscures the main message. Edit your work as you move forward and ensure it is clear and concise.
Like other types of books, Christian works require time and dedication.
