What Are the Pros and Cons of using a Pseudonym?

"Who would have thought that famous names in literature such as Mark Twain, Lewis Caroll, and Dr. Seuss were actually pseudonyms for Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, and Theodor Geisel?"

- Pseudonyms for Authors: Self-Publishing Pen Name Tips

Many writers have published their books using a pseudonym, alias, or pen name throughout history. But is this practice still relevant in today's digital age?

Let's explore the pros and cons of using aliases so that you can decide if it is right for you.

Pros of pseudonyms

- Writers use a pseudonym to protect their privacy and identity. If they write exposés or write about controversial topics, they can be at odds with governments, influential people, and even mobsters. Or sometimes, a writer would like to hide their writing from friends, family, or colleagues for various reasons. For example, they reveal personal details in a book that they don't want people close to them to know.

- Even today, many people still suffer discrimination based on race, gender, culture, and many other prejudices. Using a pseudonym offers these writers an equal opportunity to compete with other writers for recognition of their books. A famous example is Mary Ann Evans, writing as George Eliot.

- If a writer is well-known for a specific book or series or writing in a particular genre, a pseudonym allows them to experiment with writing in other genres. In such a case, he can reserve his real name for books of a specific series or genre and publish his other books under a pseudonym.

- Sometimes, an author will use a pseudonym because they have a difficult name to write and remember. Imagine if Joseph Conrad has published his books under his real name: Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski! On the other hand, their name can be so forgettable that they need to find a more memorable name. It can also be a case that a different author already uses this name.

Cons of pseudonyms

- Using a pseudonym is not good practice for authors of non-fiction since, by its nature, readers want to know about the background and expertise of the author. In this way, they can determine if the writer is trustworthy and the content factually correct.

- The nature of digital marketing makes it difficult to market your books using a pseudonym. Readers follow and connect with their favorite authors on social media. Even though an author can create social media accounts using a pseudonym, readers don't always perceive them as authentic since it is difficult for authors to share about themselves using an alias. You should note that Facebook doesn't allow profiles using pseudonyms, so you won't be able to interact with your readers on this platform.

- Using more than one name means more work regarding marketing since you have to keep up a presence for every name you use. Receiving an award under one name also doesn't boost your books written under another name.

- Signing book contracts under a pseudonym can create difficulties in proving copyright, and if in the future you need to consolidate books with different aliases under one name.

Although using aliases have been standard practice in the past, their use is not always beneficial to authors in the digital age. If you consider using a pseudonym, you need to look carefully at your reasons and the marketing, legal, and financial implications. Only go ahead once you are sure the benefit you will gain is worthwhile.
