Sometimes, a really good book will convey the same kind of human warmth embodied by close friends gathered together on a cold winter’s day. Such is the case with Jeff Turner’s heartwarming (heartrending) novel, A Rescued Soul. While his narrative literally includes those familiar winter moments, the overall experience (and message) within Mr. Turner’s book continuously highlights and illuminates humanity’s best and warmest qualities. It makes this a most comforting and emotionally satisfying read. Mr. Turner also succeeds in avoiding any maudlin clichés or trite, aphoristic scenarios in his sincerely affective exposition of plot. Instead, he keeps his human interactions real, while maintaining an uplifting yet entirely credible storyline.
As stated, the plot of Jeff Turner’s novel, A Rescued Soul, is salutary in nature. The story is slightly redemptive, but mostly edifying and even inspiring. Two kindred spirits are brought together to explore the redemptive and healing qualities embedded in the human spirit. A rugged but aging man, Lieutenant Tom Cooper, befriends and mentors a young military cadet, Henry Cameron, victim of an abusive family past, eventually working together on the older man’s large farm amidst (but largely removed from) the global circumstances of the first World War and the pandemic outbreak of Spanish flu. While both large-scale events do impact these two friends through karmic implications and destined consequences, the main story of two like-minded souls remains personal and relevant. Resonating easily with contemporary world conditions, this lovely book holds messages and lessons for all despairing but ultimately hopeful readers.
