Detective Drake Blast receives a new assignment in his dual roles as a DC Metro officer and a United Nations spy. He must pose as a UN ambassador, determined to negotiate a truce between two warring African states. The stakes are high, especially since his predecessor met an unfortunate end under mysterious circumstances. However, as Drake digs deeper, alarm bells begin ringing in the sharp detective's mind that there is more to this conflict than meets the eye. Unfortunately for him, his activities have attracted the attention of unscrupulous elements who view him as an obstacle to their success. Only time will tell if Drake can solve this mystery in A War By Any Other Name by Herb Hughes.

Herb Hughes uses seemingly minor critical details to depict a futuristic society within the world-building. Self-driving cars and the merger of the CIA and FBI into a single crime-fighting agency align with what science fiction purists expect. However, he incorporates realistic elements that readers will instantly resonate with by highlighting lesser-known details of international commuters navigating multiple connections when traveling from one African state to another. Drake's summary of his roles in his two jobs and the people he works with creates a detailed origin story with key details that keep readers immersed in the adventure. The pace gradually quickens as Drake uncovers each clue, and the fight scenes are vivid. One standout feature is the subtle humor, which complements the serious approach Drake takes in his investigation, emerging in the comedic negotiations between Drake and the African leaders. I enjoyed reading A War By Any Other Name and believe science fiction enthusiasts will find it as entertaining as I did.
