Being Middle by Lori Orlinksky is a children's book about the often-overlooked experiences of the middle child. The story follows Ellie, a middle child who feels overshadowed by her siblings. She always receives hand-me-down clothing or is compared by her teachers to her older sister. She is never the first to do something, and her younger sister is the last. Ellie feels that there is nothing special about being the middle child. Through the guidance of her mother, she goes on a journey of self-discovery and realizes the uniqueness of being the middle child. Being in the middle can be quite special.
Being Middle by Lori Orlinksky is written in a beautiful rhythmic tempo, which makes it an easy book for younger children to read. Short sentences and easy-to-understand concepts add to the charm of the story. Ellie's mother makes unique comparisons between being in the middle, for example, the icing in an Oreo cookie. This highlights that the middle is often cherished the most. Lessons are learned through the story about embracing your uniqueness and self-worth. The illustrations by Vanessa Alexandre are vibrant and engaging, bringing this sweet tale to life. The illustrations make the story accessible and enjoyable for younger readers. This is a must-read for any family with a middle child. Being a middle child myself, I found comfort in the comparisons made by Ellie's mother. A special and interesting read that will be enjoyed by middle children everywhere.
