When award-winning poet Eileen P. Kennedy met Norwegian artist Irene Christensen in the verdant locale of Costa Rica, they decided to work on a project together. Dread and Splendor is the result of that collaboration. The dreamer wonders if the world would look like something out of a fairy tale or simply vanish behind a fog of pollution and firestorm in the future. Two women with contrasting personalities grieve over the loss of a linden tree. The guardian of dreams has lost all her powers after something unexpected comes out of one of her creations. A young woman loses herself to the water as her wounded psyche and troubled mind fail to keep her from drowning. What will be the fate of a child a thousand years from now, when the Earth is irrevocably changed?
This is one of the best collections of poetry and paintings I've ever come across. Eileen P. Kennedy's poetry complements Irene Christensen's artwork to perfection. These poems are "written responses" to Irene's paintings. As such, they cover similar themes and abstract ideas related to nature, beauty, and environmental exploitation, with an underlying feminine core that is unmissable. I think Eileen and Irene have accomplished everything they set out to express with their collaboration. Dread and Splendor will be appreciated by both poetry and art aficionados. Mesmerizing is the word that comes to mind whenever I look at Irene's paintings. Eileen's poetry also has something special about it that makes you want to revisit the book over and over again. Highly recommended.
