Fragments of the Invisible by Ferdinando Emilio Abbate is a collection of aphorisms that are designed to tease the reader while providing an alternative look at life, love, and humanity. They are divided into five categories that examine great matters, the trivial and the hidden, justice, love, faith, and spirit. The themes include war and peace, human intelligence, pride, how history is recorded, democracy, friendships, politics, freedom, the aging process, pride and ego, success and failure, the legal profession and the law. Some of the sayings may seem contradictory, playing on words and their meaning. Many would qualify as paraprosdokians -- figures of speech or sentences that deliver an unexpected outcome, with the proverbial twist in the tale, or should that read tail? The aphorisms reflect many aspects of our reality, questioning common beliefs, and offering a perceptive commentary on the human condition.

Ferdinando Emilio Abbate offers both encouragement and veiled criticism by adding spice to life and directing fun at everyday notions and truisms. The book combines philosophy and spirituality, with a tongue-in-cheek look at life. The thoughts on love are particularly intriguing, amusing, and insightful. The section dealing with religion is equally thought-provoking. The writing flows freely, with subtle messages that emerge in layers. Sometimes the lines speak in riddles, and the answer is not readily apparent, requiring reflection and debate. Readers are free to disagree. Charming illustrations add an air of nostalgia, reminiscent of a bygone era. The result is a concise but lively and entertaining read that will amuse, bemuse, and get the reader thinking. Written with insight and humor, Fragments of the Invisible will challenge the reader to pause and evaluate what has been said.
