Monsters Arise! by John DeGuire begins after a near-fatal attack in London, with Vlad Dracula III awakening with a transplanted human heart and discovering that his survival is part of a wider operation run by Dr. Moreau. Escaping confinement, Dracula follows a trail of stolen research, altered creatures, and vanished allies that leads him across the Arctic in search of Saul Frankenstein. At the same time, Dracula’s wife Aoife goes on the run with their children, drawing the attention of Sherlock Holmes, who claims to be dismantling the same network. As routes cross through Europe, Africa, and rural Vermont, each group uncovers evidence of coordinated experimentation, abduction, and concealed authority. The pursuit brings Dracula, Frankenstein, Aoife, and Holmes toward a single facility where identities, loyalties, and motives collide.

I'm so very grateful that my Scandinavian cruise on the Queen Mary 2 took place before I read Monsters Arise! by John DeGuire, and as a result, I had a little extra chuckle! Monsters Arise! is the third book in the Holiday Spirit series, but it reads perfectly well as a standalone. That said, I think missing the first two is a real shame. DeGuire serves up an audacious holiday adventure that treats myths, legends, and literary icons as guests at a very strange seasonal gathering. There are plenty of familiar figures, with others who are less so, and DeGuire does a fantastic job of fleshing them all out... Bad pun regretfully intended. DeGuire juggles darkness and levity with a sure hand, and while I don't see this becoming a Hallmark movie anytime soon, I can absolutely see a legion of fans of the Nightmare Before Christmas variety rising up. Very highly recommended.

As Doctor Moreau and his partners step up the pace in their plans for global domination, Count Dracula escapes from the secret facility on the doctor's island. He sets his sights on finding his friend Saul Frankenstein and reuniting with his family. His journey takes him to the farthest reaches of civilization, where he must do battle with strange, frightful creatures. The only advantage he has is his friends, who are determined to help him on this quest. Only time will tell if the blood-fuelled lord of the undead succeeds in John DeGuire's Monsters Arise! Holiday Spirit Book 3. The book picks up where its predecessor left off, strategically placing flashbacks and subtle references to emphasize key points from the previous books. This provides context and results in a fluid narrative that will appeal to avid series followers and new readers alike.

John DeGuire keeps the origin stories of Dracula and his cohorts brief, offering an immersive narrative with dialogue that oscillates between the serious and the comedic in an almost poetic fashion. The pace is graduated, picking up as the narrative approaches its conclusion. The author balances authenticity with innovation, as can be seen in the way Dracula and Frankenstein interact, where they frequently reference their signature behavior while simultaneously linking them to their search for Dracula's family. The author weaves these elements together with combat scenes that emphasize every detail of the monster battles. Monsters Arise! is a fascinating narrative that will appeal to horror and action purists, as readers experience monsters in a vulnerable, more relatable light.

Monsters Arise! by John DeGuire is the third book in the Holiday Spirit series and presents a world almost torn apart by chaos. The author brings back some of the legendary monsters and characters from literature to this action-packed narrative that will put any reader on the edge of their seat. Dr. Moreau is a greedy, dangerous person who, together with his sinister forces, is determined to take control of resources globally, and he is a master at disguising his motives. As the world faces doom, some unlikely heroes come together to destroy the enemy. Dracula teams up with the werewolf Contessa, their friend Saul Frankenstein, and the invisible Dr. Ralph Ellison to follow clues in the quest to save humanity. These characters face mounting odds, venture into dangerous places, and meet unforgiving villains while fighting to stay alive. The question is: Can they save humanity?

I found Monsters Arise! to be captivating and exhilarating. What held my interest was how the author portrayed characters like Dracula and Saul Frankenstein, entrusting them with a mission that is the opposite of how they are typically portrayed in literature and movies, which was a unique twist. John DeGuire plots like a genius, creating conflict that moves the plot steadily forward and throwing in surprising twists at unexpected moments. The characters are rock-solid and believable. I found myself rooting for the unconventional heroes while loathing the villains, and that is one of the biggest successes of this literary creation. The prose enticed me, the action made it hard for me to put this book down, and the impeccable world-building just sucked me in.

Monsters Arise! is the third book in the Holiday Spirit series by John DeGuire. It is an enthralling tale that is robust in plot and action. Some of the darkest minds are set to take down the world by taking control of its resources, and Dr. Moreau is the mastermind. They will stop at nothing to bring their nefarious schemes to fruition. They have brought in every ally and ruthless force imaginable. Count Dracula joins forces with the werewolf Contessa, Saul Frankenstein, and Dr. Ralph Ellison, the invisible man, in a daring quest to stop the bad guys and save the world. As the clock ticks, they must follow cryptic clues and signs, go into uncharted territory, and face powerful enemies to save humanity. What chances do they have of success, and above all, of even surviving what lies ahead?

I was thrilled that John DeGuire reimagines some of the characters from popular literature and movies that will stay with you even after the last page of this book. I never enjoyed Dracula in other tales as much as I did in Monsters Arise! One of the things I enjoyed was the characters' motivations. The author captures what drives both the villains and the heroes with clarity. Motivation fuels the conflict, upping the magnitude of the stakes, the level of violence, and the intensity of the action. The writing is excellent, and the descriptions are terrific. Dialogue sparkles on every page. The scenes are vividly drawn and focused in a story filled with heart-pounding action, escapes, and moments filled with danger. You will not be able to put this book down once you start reading.

In Monsters Arise! Holiday Spirit Book 3 by John DeGuire, the story begins with Dr. Moreau performing a heart transplant on Count Dracula on the same island where Dracula’s werewolf wife, Aoife, is giving birth to their twins. But neither of them is aware of the other’s presence. Meanwhile, Aoife, along with the family’s best friend, Dr. Ralph Ellison, also known as The Invisible Man, has fled Paris to protect the newborns and seek safety at their home. Dracula, after escaping from Dr. Moreau’s island, reunites with his long-lost friend, Saul Frankenstein, and learns of Moreau’s terrifying new achievement. Moreau can clone former inhabitants of Earth. As Moreau positions himself as a godlike ruler ready to crush any opposition, Dracula, Aoife, and their circle of friends are thrown into a confrontation with monsters born from twisted magic, ancient fear, and fractured tradition.

Monsters Arise! by John DeGuire is an interesting and intriguing blend of fantasy, science fiction, and the supernatural. The storyline was fast-paced with enough action to hold my attention throughout. Several plots are intertwined without detracting from each other. The writing style was engaging, and I had enough time to absorb every event before the next one. The fights between the friends and the monsters were descriptive and intense. The characters felt normal and realistic. Dracula and Aoife had a special relationship that was tested as a family. The inclusion of Frankenstein and Ralph Ellison felt natural. The book was excellently written and was a compelling read. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and I enjoyed the time I spent with the characters.
