Legacy of a King is a romantic fantasy novel with coming of age themes, written for young adults and older by author Charlene Sponsel. In a fictional kingdom by the name of Conica, a murdered queen leaves a king in deep grief. Lili is a young woman who finds herself promised as the king’s next bride, with no other choice than to accept for the sake of her family. But the former queen was murdered for a reason, and there are those who set their sights on Lili before she has even been handed a crown. To make matters even more complicated, the young Prince Cam develops feelings for his father’s promised bride, and Lili can’t help but reciprocate.
Author Charlene Sponsel pays attention to detail in every aspect of this immersive and romantic novel, from character development and romantic plotlines right through to pseudo-medieval worldbuilding, social standings, politics, and adventure. The world Lili inhabits is highly visual and cinematic in its depiction, allowing readers to sit on her shoulder as events unfold all around her. It is by no means a straightforward romance, with triangles and twists to please fans of the genre and keep them guessing as to where the plot will lead them. However, more than that, it is an excellent and poignant coming of age moment for a young woman who wants to take control of her own life. Overall, Legacy of a King is a clean romantic read for all fans of historical and epic fantasy fiction to enjoy.
