"One Bite Away" by Ronna Gage is a sexy and well-thought-out paranormal romance. It begins in 1791 with Martin witnessing his wife’s trial for attempting to murder him. Grace tried to end her vampire husband’s life by plunging a stake through his heart. She misses by a few crucial inches. She is also a vampire, and she is sentenced by the Vampire Council. And now in the present day Marty is a nightclub owner (what better job for a vampire), still missing the closeness he and Grace used to have before she began to hate him. However, he won’t rush into giving his heart away again. And he won’t ever change someone as he did with Grace. But then Carleena walks into his club. She is beautiful, fascinated by vampires and wears a very interesting ruby pendant that she has inherited. Carleena, a talented dancers, whisks Marty off his feet. However, tragedy threatens to mar the relationship.
Although they are impossibly good looking, the characters in this story are likeable and complex. They are not cardboard cutouts and we discover the events that have shaped them into who they are now. They are interesting and attractive and we become involved. There are some steamy but sensitive sex scenes but this story is more than an escapist romp. The plot turns in directions we can’t foresee and our characters’ resolves are tested. Settings, both historical and contemporary, are well portrayed. The cover is striking and the text is well-presented, so, in general, this is a very professional and impressive novel. And very enjoyable.
