Set in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Out of Focus by Carol Ashe explores the dangerous crimes of human and drug trafficking. Margarite Hunter is serving as a detective for WPS alongside Hank, her partner. A victim is found, beaten and bruised, and left for dead. Later, she is identified as Anna Kent, a sixteen-year-old caught in the horrific sex trade ravaging the city and other parts of the world. With no leads to follow and no witnesses, Margarite and Hank seem headed for a dead end. Later, a shot is fired just outside the station. This time the victim dies on the spot. This marks the start of a long, hard battle against a ruthless gang that will stop at nothing to rule in the city once again. Margarite will have to learn to trust again and hopefully fall in love amidst the surrounding havoc.
Authored by a police officer, Out of Focus contains an extra strand of originality that takes a look at the lives of the officers that put their lives on the line every day. Carol Ashe explores in detail some of the crimes that are prevalent in many parts of the world. The story line is well designed, showing both the cruelty reigning behind this world of crime while still focusing on the resoluteness of many great officers who pursue the criminals relentlessly. Including the twist of romance amidst the action was a great way to slow down the fast paced plot while still maintaining the suspense. It gave me some time to catch my breath. The characters fitted their roles perfectly while the dialogues between them were light hearted and engaging. Well structured and skilfully written, Out of Focus is a definite must-read.
