Splish! Splash! Whoosh! Ocean Life by Sonia Maria is a lively introduction to the creatures that live in and around the sea. Starting on the beach, each creature has a page with a rhyming verse to introduce it. The closing line of each rhyme includes sound words that correspond to the life of that animal, ending with the word 'Whoosh!' There is a nice progression from the shore animals all the way out to the deep ocean. A variety of ocean denizens are described, from a hermit crab to a parrotfish, to a manta ray. A lot of information is packed into each little rhyme, which serves as an enjoyable introduction to life in the ocean.
Sonia Maria has created a colorful and informative guide to the ocean for young children with her book Splish! Splash! Whoosh! As a retired children's librarian, I love the addition of the sound words at the end. When reading each rhyme out loud, kids will love chiming in with that final 'Whoosh!' The illustrations by Selfi Sidabutar are fun and captivating. The pages flow together, just like the ocean, and each creature is the star of their page. Many children don't have the opportunity to live close to the sea, so Splish! Splash! Whoosh! serves as an excellent primer on the vast abundance of creatures who call the ocean home. It might even inspire kids to investigate and find out more about the animals that intrigue them. Splish! Splash! Whoosh! Ocean Life is an engaging look at the unique creatures that inhabit our beautiful oceans.
