Humanity might not have much longer to live in The Awakening by Tony Mazzarella. Two brothers who are supernatural beings had fled their father’s realm a few thousand years ago and rebelled against him. Their goal was to destroy humanity, one of their father’s creations, but one of the brothers fell in love and decided to give humankind a couple thousand years more. The time for humankind’s destruction has now come, and Caitlyn is part of the archaeological team that stumbles on information about the so-called Awakening. Caitlyn also has disturbing, but also slightly alluring dreams about one of the two brothers. When her father joins the team, they go on a dangerous mission, which takes them on a journey to one of the famous Egyptian pyramids – but they don’t get there via conventional means! They hope to find the answer to stopping the Awakening in the tomb of a woman nobody knew about but will they have a chance when the creatures of hell start making their way towards the surface?

I have to admit that I did not expect to be that taken by The Awakening by Tony Mazzarella. I thought it would just be one more average adventure novel set in a pyramid, probably with too much cheesy romance included. I was positively surprised and hooked after a few chapters. The whole novel is really well done and has an interesting and exciting story arc. Yes, there is romance involved, but it’s tasteful, not over the top, and it doesn’t take center stage. Which is just as well; after all, the end of the human population on Earth should take priority! I’m so glad that the author actually did get the priorities right (love IS important, but what’s the point when everyone dies?). I enjoyed following the little group of friends and at some stage wasn’t quite sure how things would end. There are some images that are quite disturbing, but just like the romance element, I found that they have been done tastefully (in my opinion). Here’s an author who knows how to use just the right amount of different elements. It’s like making a good meal: too much salt, and it’s ruined. Too much pepper, and it’s ruined – you get the point. This book is like a good meal: it has the right balance of all the ingredients.
