The Lincoln Deception is a fascinating story of one of the most famous crimes in United States history; the Lincoln assassination. This event is brought to life with its historical fiction plot containing pages full of mystery, intriguing characters, deception, love, murder, and truth.
David O. Stewart brings to life the last statement of John Bingham, the actual lead prosecutor of the John Wilkes Booth conspirators. On his death bed, Bingham reveals knowledge of a secret to his physician. This secret was passed along to him by one of the conspirators on trial. However, Bingham states he will take it to his grave because it is too detrimental to the Republic of the United States, although it is now 1900, 35 years past the trial. John Bingham's physician is so fascinated by the concept of a missing link with the Booth conspirator theory that he sets out with another man to seek the truth and tell the world.
As a first-time reader of David O. Stewart's work, I was completely engulfed in the concept of this novel. Having two characters struggle with the way society would view them together in the 1900s -- as a black man and a white man working together -- in pursuit of a mystery 35 years old, was very well researched and most accurate. The author gives a brilliant view into the time period. Each step and process throughout the story was not predictable as most who know the different assassination conspiracies would suspect it to be. It is quite the contrary, being engaging and suspenseful throughout the entirety of the book.
