The Seashell Safe Harbor: Friendship by Sherrie Schmidt takes readers on a bright, cheerful adventure. It introduces you to the friendship group—Happy the sailboat, Starfish Sue, Pelican Hugh, Dolphin Rue, Captain Drew, and their guests—who all set out together on the Friendship Trip. They plan to sail to Friendship Island. While on the sea, they write down what they admire about each other, seal those notes in bottles, and toss them into the ocean. Later, when they land on the beach, they pick up seashells that can be used to make beautiful crafts, and conch shells that they press to their ears to hear all the ocean’s sounds. As night falls, they talk to the stars, share the treasures they find, and return home with the help of Lighthouse Lou.
The Seashell Safe Harbor: Friendship is a fun, adventure story about what it takes to be a good friend. It has an engaging cast of characters, each with their own unique personality and traits that make them stand out. Unlike most children’s books that center on making friends, this book focuses more on how to keep a friendship alive. Each activity the friendship group did aimed at helping them improve their communication, listening, sharing, and emotional awareness. Sherrie Schmidt helps readers understand that friendship is a treasure. She also educates readers about sailing and life on the coast. She has included a glossary of terms used in the story and colorful art that transports you to the seaside. These pages are packed with lively illustrations—think sparkling blue water, friendly sea animals, and colorful passengers joining Happy the sailboat. It's a wonderful book. I think every kid will love reading it, and it’s a great way to spark conversations about kindness, empathy, and what friendship really looks like.
