Through the Shimmer of Time is a children’s historical fantasy novel written by Jennifer Jensen. Jim was pretty bored escorting his little sister Ashley through Granger Village again, but his mother had assigned him the task as part of his punishment for playing with the motors from his model rockets. While his friend and partner-in-crime, Kyle, had gotten off scot-free, Jim was grounded and doomed to babysitting his sister. Even so, the Granger Village storyteller’s tale about the haunting of the old trapper’s cabin fired up Jim’s imagination. Ashley had her heart set on speaking with the potter after the story ended, but the crowds of tourists waiting to see the artisan at work meant they’d be waiting there for hours, and Jim had some exploring to do. He dragged his sister off to the weaving shed where his mom was and left her there. Jim knew he could find that old cabin if he just looked hard enough, and he was willing to risk parental ire to do just that. What he didn’t expect was to go time-travelling into the past.
Jennifer Jensen’s children’s time travel fantasy novel, Through the Shimmer of Time, is exciting and fast-paced. The author has her character go back in time to the late-1830s, and it’s enjoyable to see the contrasts between then and modern times. I was particularly interested in watching how Jim copes with the more primitive conditions found back then and handles the chores he’s assigned by Hannah’s family. This is a well-written, original, and compelling story with fresh, vibrant characters and a well-researched historical plot. For Jim and the reader, history really does come alive in a story that mixes the fantasy genre with both the historical and mystery genres. Through the Shimmer of Time is highly recommended.
