Wings of Freedom by Bibi LeBlanc is a dream come true for historians. In 1948, Germany was being rebuilt after the massive destruction of World War II. The once proud country was divided into four political zones—three governed by free countries and one controlled by Russia. When Russia closed the borders of West Berlin, conventional wisdom predicted there would be no way to supply the roughly 2.5 million residents. The Allies proved this dire prediction wrong and set into action Wings of Freedom. The massive number of supplies delivered to West Berlin during the airlift does seem impossible. As you read this amazing book, you will be in awe of the men and women who made the impossible possible. This airlift also did much to repair the relationship between the West and Germany. Be ready to be mesmerized by this thrilling story of humanitarian aid.

While one can learn the tonnage of supplies—milk, wheat, coal, etc.—flown into West Germany during the airlift, no one will ever know the number of lives touched and saved through the life-giving supplies. Author Bibi LeBlanc's father was intimately involved in supplying the citizens of West Berlin. Bibi developed Explainer Coloring Books, which gives text accompanied by coloring pictures. This is a fun way to explore any topic, especially history. Bibi writes in a very informative manner that is easy to read. It is also fascinating to see the story unfold, bringing history to life. The reader can almost feel the tension in the air and the relief the people of West Berlin experienced. When looking at amazing feats of modern society, the Berlin Airlift is truly an event of herculean portions. I highly recommend Wings of Freedom as it is the best book on the Berlin Airlift that I have ever read.
