We all look back at the panic surrounding the end of the Mayan calendar in the year 2012 with derision, contempt, or laughter. 2012: It Actually Happened explores a fictional future of what happened if 2012 actually happened in the way that the ancient Mayans predicted. Bob Dowd plays with the ideas of one con-man bent on deceiving those too gullible to keep from succumbing to the panic of the end of the world. He runs a lucrative business insuring those people with something akin to "end of the world insurance." Bob thinks he will be sitting pretty when the world doesn't end, but then...unimaginably...it does. Now Bob and his family have to fight off the end of the world and also all the people he promised to help. The dystopian wake that follows is intriguing, fascinating, and not just a little tongue-in-cheek.

This book was a little hard to place at first. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be taking things seriously or laugh along with Bob as he tricked countless idiots into handing him their life savings. As it turned out, 2012: It Actually Happened is a pretty fun read. It's funny and thrilling in turns, all revolving around this seemingly average guy who you want to hate (he's a con man after all!) but you really can't help but eventually like as he fights to get his family through an apocalypse he was too arrogant to prepare for. Bob Dowd is new to me as an author, and I really enjoyed his style and plot choices!
