A Dog in my Yard written by Tricia DellAnno and illustrated by Jim Pearson is an enjoyable children’s picture book and is the second installment in The Golden Doodle Rules series. This colorfully illustrated story is about Jonathan’s new pet Millie, a cute little dog who loves the outdoors. She enjoys digging in the garden, looking for the squirrel’s nuts, and making it a habit to wake up the neighbors when the sun rises. Millie also loves to chew and make holes in socks, undies, gloves, and sneakers. She disturbs virtual meetings, has to be taken out for a walk in all kinds of weather, and has to be toilet-trained. When she steals a whole turkey from the dining table, Jonathan’s parents have had enough and want to re-home her. Can Jonathan get them to appreciate Millie’s beautiful side so he can keep his beloved pet at home?

Tricia DellAnno’s A Dog in my Yard is a delightful sequel to her first book No Dog in My Yard. With a story that is simple enough to be told in a few words, this book should capture children’s undivided attention. Using basic and rhyming phrases, this story is best read out loud. Enhancing the text are the attention-getting illustrations that complement the story perfectly. Millie is such a mischievous but lovable creature that every child will fall in love with her. Ultimately, the moral of the story is to encourage children’s problem-solving skills as they learn how Jonathan presents his case. This book can be enjoyed by families who may or may not have a pet dog in the house.
