If you are looking for a feel-good story, look no further than Purrfect Match: A Cozy Cat Romantic Comedy by M.J. Fox. In it, a distinguished lady cat of breeding meets a homeless black tomcat. Princess Purrfect is, well, perfect, while Maverick is decidedly not, though the question, of course, is whether they are perfect for one another. When Purrfect loses her owner, Catherine, her home may well be lost too. However, Maverick can help Purrfect, though she wants little to do with him – after all, he is a mere stray, and she is from the House of Catherine. Can Purrfect swallow her pride and accept Maverick’s help, or will her home be appropriated by Catherine’s greedy niece who plans to sell the house for easy cash?
As a cat lover, I really liked the premise of Purrfect Match, though I must admit I had some reservations about how author M.J. Fox could pull it off. My worries were all for naught. This gentle parody of the romance genre is spot-on, from its clever secondary characters (my favorite is a squirrel named Lewis) to its comic and catty dialogue. From its quick pacing to its spirit of adventure, the book is an entertaining read. But surprisingly, it also has plenty of suspense. The scene where Purrfect roams the dark woods and is startled by an eerie call is a great example of how to build tension. Even the romance has an unexpected depth to it, largely due to Maverick’s world-weary wisdom. I highly recommend this charming book to other cat lovers and even lovers of sweet romances.
