A Glimpse of her Soul (Gillian Boone) by Stuart Jaffe features young protagonist, Gillian Boone, a sixteen-year-old girl who discovers she is one of the Marked. Creatures named Callers from a place called Spirit are killing the Marked in a bid to read their souls and find a way home. After an attack at her school, Gillian learns the truth about her heritage and must learn to fight if she is going to survive. Along with her father, another Marked called Kyle and her very own Caller Jackhammer Jack, Gillian prepares to do battle for her very soul, armed with the only weapon that can kill a Caller - infant bones.
Stuart Jaffe has created a well constructed and detailed universe in A Glimpse of her Soul. Gillian is a typical teenage girl, dealing with bullies and the popular boy not knowing she exists, when she is plunged into another world she never knew was there. She handles herself well as she learns about the Callers and how to defeat them. The relationship between Gillian and her father is believable and well written. Pops, as her father is called, struggles between protecting his daughter and learning to look at her as an adult who can stand on her own two feet. The Callers are unique and effective monsters. Jackhammer Jack walks the line between good guy and bad guy and had me guessing until the end as to which side he was on. A great start to a new series.
