A King Ascends by Jane McKay, the first installment in a series, starts with a spaceship crashing on a prison planet named Greenwich. Doctor Alexis Michaels treats one of the survivors' wounds. He shows unexpected characteristics, puzzling Alexis with his body's reaction to the injuries. Prefect Tamias accompanies Alexis' patient. He claims the wounded man is his prisoner and must be brought to Tyrea as soon as possible. But Alexis doesn't believe him. She learns that her patient is a kidnapped survival instructor of the Intergalactic Police Training Academy named Jon Tor. She helps Jon escape to meet with a friend from IPA. It soon becomes clear that Jon is not just a simple instructor. Also, there is a possible coup d'état on his home planet, Tyrea, with cruel General Tariq trying to seize power from the royal family.
In A King Ascends, Jane McKay impresses readers with prominent and intricate world-building. The royal family is connected to the planet Tyrea, and this connection is fascinating to explore. Also, the idea of royals as protectors of the planet is very appealing. A King Ascends offers interesting character development. Alexis is brave, smart, and loyal. She is determined to help Jon at any cost, even risking her life. Jon is humble and kind. Also, he values friendship and loves his family unconditionally. At the other end of the spectrum is General Tariq. His cruelty, with a touch of sadism, reminds us of a dictator. The narrative is fast-paced and full of action. McKay crafts a compelling intrigue with many twists and turns. I enjoyed the adventurous aspect of the book and the hard questions regarding the perpetual fight between good and evil that it raises. I recommend this book as an engaging start to the series to mature fans of sci-fi, adventures, and novels with a political element.
